Fostered the devotion to the
  Sacred Heart of Jesus
and on 23 Sept., 1856,  extended
               this feast  to the whole world with the rite of a double major. 
         By his decree,  the Catholic world was consecrated to 
the Sacred Heart of Jesus 
on 16 June, 1875.

Proclaimed the doctrine of  the 
Immaculate Conception 
on 8 Dec. 1854
 in the document Ineffabilis Deus.
 

Issued the encyclical
Syllabus of Errors
on 
8 Dec. 1864
 


 

Convoked the First Vatican Council
(1869-1870)
during which the dogma of 
Papal Infallibility
was defined.
 


 

Declared St. Joseph
Patron of the Univeral Church
Prayer to St. Joseph.
 


 

Declared St. Francis de Sales 
a Doctor of the Universal Church.
 


 

Founded the Pio-Christian Museum
(I) and(II)
in 1854 for  works 
excavated from  the
Catacombs.
 


 

Ruled as Supreme Pontiff for 32 years, 
the longest  reign in the history 
of the Papacy.
